Some of us are familiar with the method of encouraging the growth of the tree by whacking its trunk a few times. One gardening expert says: "At times, the flowering hormone in the tree seems to get stuck and no flowers appear and to carefully persuade the tree to flower, you have to shock it." Hitting the trunk several times, will caused small bruises in the bark and thus, may stimulate growth..
Sad to know that sometimes God had to apply this method on us to stimulate our spiritual growth, too. When trouble comes into our lives, we sometimes feel as if we've been hit. We feel desperation and then we wonder why it is happening to us. One possible reason is that God using a painful experience to get our attention. Probably God is using pain in our life to lovingly persuade us to change. We all know that the season of trouble will not be easy, but if we let ourselves be trained by it, new growth will result to a better "us". Bear in mind that affliction for God's people can be the pruning knife to prepare us for greater fruitfulness.

I wasn't familiar with the hitting the trunk fact, it was interesting.
It's true that some of the biggest growth I've had in my personal life came right after my biggest setbacks and troubles. I've come out stronger through all of them.

Wonderful words of wisdom Grace. This is so very true. When I'm in pain, I try to remind myself what Jesus endured, and then I feel bad for complaining.
As for the trees, another interesting tid bit is that a good first thunderstorm is needed to shock the trees, grass, flowers and want not to come out of total hibernation.
