My husband and I went to the Asian Market this afternoon and I was so happy that I found this fruit, Rambutan. I bought a pouch that contains a dozen of them. I can't believe how expensive they are here; $3.95. The price is almost x40 compare to the Philippines. And because I miss this fruit, I still bought some. Lookie, I took picture of it while we were driving going home, because I can't wait to get home to eat it. I have a feeling that it will all be done before we get home..
Rambutan is a medium-sized tropical fruit in the family Sapindaceae. It is native to Indonesia, Philippines and the part of Southeast Asia, although its precise natural distribution is unknown. It is closely related to several other edible tropical fruit including the Lychee, Longan and Mamoncillo. It is believed to be native to the Malay Archipelago. Rambutan in Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia literally means hairy caused by the 'hair' that covers this fruit. In Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, it is known as mamón chino. There is a second species regularly for sale at Malay markets which is known as "wild" rambutan. It is a little smaller than the usual red variety and is colored yellow.

We have rambutan fruit in Singapore too. This fruit always reminded me of a story about my father who had climbed the one in the front yard in our kampong house and even fell down once from the climbing.
